GeoLimna Research Group

GeoLimna Research Group started in 2012 as a group with the focus on Geography and Limnology. It belongs to the School of Environment, Faculty of Engineering of the Universidad de Antioquia -U. de A.-, Colombia.

Its work is based on the three main activities of the Universidad de Antioquia: Education, Research and Contact with the Community through assessment and development projects, looking for the improvement  of both environmental and social well-being.

Currently, its members are Professors, co-investigators, and students, who work together in projects such as the development of briquettes from Macrophytes like E. crassipes. The group participates also in projects of water potabilization in rural areas using Moringa (a plant) as a flocculant, in conjunction with simple technologies like SODIS disinfection.

Most of our research is located in Cienaga de Ayapel, a big marsh in the valley of the Cauca and San Jorge rivers, north coast of Colombia. Its importance is historical, as a territory of an ancient culture, called Zenu, first seen by the American geographer James Parson. Currently, encompasses a great environmental diversity, and serves as a place of transit for migratory birds.

The group works with the support of the U. de A. It has a close relationship with Corpoayapel, IfbV and has developed projects in cooperation with the University of Dusseldorf, University of Giessen, Universidad Nueva Granada, Universidad Central de la Plata, Universidad de Caldas.
